Accommodation in Walhalla, VIC can be hard to secure on peak weekends because the town is small and visitor beds are limited. Staying in Walhalla itself suits travellers who want the full heritage village experience, but it is not always the easiest base for a broader Gippsland trip.
Erica sits about 15 minutes west of Walhalla on sealed road. It is not in Walhalla, but it can be the easier base when you want motel rooms, pub meals, parking at the door and a simpler run back toward Moe or Melbourne the next morning.

Staying in Walhalla itself
Walhalla has four types of accommodation in town: heritage cottages, a boutique hotel, a B&B, and a free campground. Here’s what each one means in practice.
Heritage cottages
The biggest share of Walhalla’s beds sit inside restored 1800s cottages dotted along the valley. You’ll see names like Spetts Cottage, Sancreed, Mill House, Creek Cottage, Lee Manor, and Jacomb’s Cottage and Studio in booking searches. Most are self-contained, sleep two to six, and run off wood heaters or reverse-cycle air. Expect original features: tin ceilings, narrow staircases, small bathrooms tucked into corners that weren’t designed with plumbing in mind.
Pricing sits mostly in the $150 to $320 a night range for a two-person cottage, with larger properties costing more during long weekends. Whitlow Manor and The Quarters (three bedrooms, sleeps up to six) cover the group end of the market.
What you get for it: you’re inside the town after the day-trippers have gone. That matters, because Walhalla empties out around 4pm most days. Staying in town gives you the quiet back, plus the cemetery walk at dusk and the band rotunda to yourself in the morning.
Walhalla’s Star Hotel
The Star is a 12-suite boutique hotel opposite the band rotunda. All rooms have ensuites and king beds. Rates typically include a three-course dinner at Parker’s Restaurant on-site and a full breakfast, which means you don’t need to think about food for the evening. The building is a 1998 reconstruction of the original 1873 hotel, so it looks old but runs on modern everything.
Worth knowing: no TVs in rooms (reception doesn’t reach the valley), mobile coverage is Telstra only, and children under 12 are not accommodated. The honesty bar in the lounge is a nice detail.
Windsor House B&B and The Quarters
Windsor House is the oldest B&B in town – original 1890 brickwork, 90,000 bricks of it. Five bedrooms run on a proper English-breakfast model. Most rooms share the main bathroom; the Aberfeldy suite at the top has its own ensuite and a four-poster bed. Under-12s aren’t accepted, and nor are pets.
The Quarters is a separate three-bedroom self-catered property on the same block, accessed via a bridge across Stringer’s Creek. Queen beds upstairs, two singles downstairs, fully equipped kitchen. Sleeps six. This is a better bet for families or groups travelling together.
Camping in town
Walhalla’s North Gardens is free, first-come-first-served, and runs on standard bush-camp rules. Toilets and water are on-site, but no showers, no powered sites, and no bookings. Dogs are allowed on lead. It fills fast on long weekends, Christmas, and Easter, so if you want a spot in peak season, arrive early.
Chinese Gardens, 2km north of town, has showers and charges a small fee. It closes over winter, usually reopening in October.

Staying nearby – Erica and Rawson
What Erica gives you that Walhalla often does not is a simpler evening: parking close to the room, pub meals when the kitchen is open, basic supplies nearby, and an easier departure toward Moe or Melbourne the next morning. Do not plan on buying fuel in Erica, Rawson or Walhalla. Fill up in Moe if you are coming from the west, or Traralgon if you are coming from the south-east.

- Heritage weekend, in-town experience, just the two of you: book a cottage or the Star Hotel early. Six weeks out minimum for autumn weekends.
- Group of four or more: staying nearby is usually easier. Walhalla’s inventory fragments into small cottages; Erica and Rawson have more flexibility.
- Mid-week, any season: Walhalla opens up. Most cottages and the Star have weeknight availability a few days out.
- Last-minute booking (inside a week): try Erica first. The motel rooms turn over more often than Walhalla’s cottages.
- Running the rail trail or a multi-day Gippsland loop: Erica sits five minutes from the Thomson trailhead, which matters when you want to start walking at 8am.

Booking windows and peak periods
A straight summary of when Walhalla books out:
- Autumn (April to early May): the biggest crunch. Book 2 to 3 months ahead for weekends.
- Easter and school holidays: weekends book 2 to 4 months out.
- King’s Birthday and other long weekends: 6 to 8 weeks ahead for cottages and the Star.
- Winter (June to August): quieter. Some cottages reduce availability or close altogether during the coldest weeks.
- Summer: usually the easiest time to book close to the date.
If you’re flexible about when to visit, mid-week any time outside Easter and school holidays is when the whole thing gets easier. Prices soften, availability opens up, and the town is quieter.
What to ask before booking
Things that aren’t always obvious from a listing:
- Parking: some cottages sit up steep paths; the nearest parking may be 50 to 100 metres downhill with your bags.
- Food hours: Parker’s at the Star primarily serves hotel guests, not walk-ins. The Wally Pub runs normal hours but closes earlier than a city pub. There’s no supermarket, so bring supplies if you’re self-catering.
- Pet policy: most places don’t accept pets. Ask before assuming.
- Access roads in winter: the road in from Erica is sealed and normally fine, but the back roads to Thomson Dam and Brunton’s Bridge can get icy in July and August.
- Mobile signal: Telstra works patchily; other carriers mostly don’t. If you need reception, Erica or Rawson is your better bet.
